Task 1 In what ways do your media products use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways do your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My music video challenges the forms and conventions of a modern music video as the narrative is set in the 70's using super 8 footage. We have done this because, although Jo is still a pop artist, she is appealing to a slightly older female audience and therefore does not match other videos of her genre.

The narrative is shown by the projector that Jo is watching. We did this to give her the image that she is emotional and feminine, looking back at nostalgic memories. Although the home movie footage is to old to be her, it may attract a slightly older audience. This technique is often used in slow moving love songs.

The bright light of the projector behind her gives a sort of halo effect to her and makes her look angelic, conforming to her star image. It also creates a sentimental feeling to the attic.

Close ups are a popular convention in pop music videos and in this case really allows the audience to connect to her. It also helps her star image of being an attractive young woman.

The long shots of Jo shows that although there is a lot of clutter around her, she is wearing a thick wooly jumper and short jeans with bear feet. This shows that she feels cosy and at home. It looks like the average attic would look like so the audience might feel that she is grounded and has a relatively normal life, similar to audiences.

The narrative engages the audience and also fits into Jo's style / genre of music. Most narrative based pop songs are about love so we developed on this with our home movie footage of the couple. 50% of our video is narrative because Jo's lip synching may dis-engage the audience after too long.

For the front cover of the digipack, we decided to stay with the theme from our music video and gave Jo a super eight look that we made on photoshop. I think this goes well with her star image as she looks happy and attractive, as well as making her look warm and sentimental through the colour scheming.

For the back cover we stayed to the theme of old super 8 footage as we put 3 photos of Jo onto a video reel. The colour is pink to make her look feminine and sensitive. The song names are songs that we made up to match her star image. Most of these song titles are about heartbreak and love.
